Update

Posted: April 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

I just want to let everyone know that Heavy Metal Addiction is still here but on a temporary hiatus. My main computer got hit with a Trojan Virus a few weeks ago, laid dormant for some time and activated itself. The virus ate everything from drafts of reviews, to emails, to music files and more. I got the virus removed and most of everything recovered but I’m in the middle of fixing my extensive collection and promos on my external harddrive. It’s going to take a little more time but I expect the website to be back on track in a few more days.

Thanks!

Steve

Time to kick off 2010 with a quick look at 2009…..specifically some of the CDs & DVDs that I failed to acquire and desperately want! This week will feature all WANTED posts and maybe a review or two by the end of the week.

Today marks another year in the books for this website. It’s hard to believe that it’s been four years but time really does fly by when you do something you enjoy. Needless to say, my hobby has grown over the last four years, and the music continues to pile up thanks to all the bands, labels, distribution companies and PR firms sending in so many CDs for review. Add those promos to the stuff I buy and it’s no wonder why I need more storage!

So what happened here in 2009?

I didn’t post as much. For some reason I just didn’t feel like posting. There were plenty of great albums, plenty of Metal news to discuss and plenty of purchases made for my collection…..but I didn’t feel like writing. Without actually counting I believe I posted about a third less than 2008. Hopefully this is something that I can fix this year because I enjoying discussing everything. One of the reasons for my lack of posts was that I took the time to sit and listen and not rush a lot of the albums I acquired. Another reason was that there are a ton of other websites & blogs doing the same thing and I felt that they did a better job.

I finally received a million hits! In July, HMA finally received it’s 1,000,000 visitor so thanks to everyone who has stopped by. I thought that I would get to a million earlier in the year but the lack of posts contributed to the lack of visitors. I started off 2009 well in January & February…..readership was blowing away the previous year but the I started to write less and site traffic went down 10,000+ each month. I don’t really care much about site stats and site traffic but WordPress allows you to track your traffic and I noticed a serious drop-off for 2009 by 140,000 readers. Either way, a lot of people still like to come to the site no matter what I post and it’s nice to know that my opinion may count for something. I’ve made a lot of friends online through this site, as well as a lot of contacts in the industry, so to all of you a big “thanks” for coming by a spending some time.

There were some popular posts this year and the top one was my WANTED post on Whitesnake’s LOVEHUNTER (1979) & STARKERS IN TOKYO (1997). The Van Halen “reunion” picture with David Lee Roth from Feb 2007 was 2nd, followed by my review of Lita Ford – OUT FOR BLOOD (1983), the first picture of Journey with new singer Arnel Pineda and my review of Legs Diamond – TOWN BAD GIRL (1990). The funny thing about these Top 5 posts is that only the Whitesnake post was from 2009, the Journey post was from January 2008 and the other three from 2007. The Top 5 viewed album reviews for 2009 were Lita Ford and Legs Diamond coming in #1 & #2 with Ozzy Osbourne – BLACK RAIN (2007) in the 3rd spot. Following those three were Whitesnake – s/t (1987) and AC/DC – HIGH VOLTAGE (1975) with Anvil – THIS IS THIRTEEN (2007) right behind. Lita, Legs Diamond and Ozzy all made the top album reviews for 2008 as well.

So what’s on deck for 2010? Not sure…..hopefully I will post more, that’s probably the thing I would like to do the most. Reviews of older/classic Metal records is definitely going to be a priority as is catching up on some of those 2009 albums I didn’t get a chance to review. January is always a catch up month for me so there are going to be some 2009 albums I missed out on being purchased and reviewed. I say the same thing every year but I’m going to try and keep up with the 2010 releases…..we’ll see what happens because I never do, there are just too many albums out there! I’ll still do playlists, Ebay Madness, Wanted, CD Scavenger Hunt and I am hoping for more concerts to come around so hopefully this year will be another good one.

So that’s about it for now. I’d like to thank everyone for stopping by in 2009 and giving the site a look. Hopefully site traffic continues to grow again and people will comment on the posts. I’d also like to thank all the bands, labels and PR people again for sending in the promos last year, it was a great year for discovering new music.

Here’s to a great 2010! Cheers!

What’s coming in October…..

Posted: October 1, 2009 in Uncategorized

Nothing is worse than planning to do something and not getting to finish it. I had planned to do a project in August that I would review 31 albums from 2009 in 31 days…..didn’t happen. As many of you know, I got injured and couldn’t sit at the computer. So I tried again in September with a continuation of the project, 30 album reviews in 30 days…..didn’t happen. I was only able to do 10 reviews and life got in the way.

So what am I coming up with in October?

Not another project! I am definitely going to try and post more, especially album reviews, because the end of the year is coming and I want to expand my Year End lists. There are some great albums that have come out this year that I have just gotten to and some (hopefully) great albums to come. Setting up a project schedule hasn’t worked so I’m not trying it again for a while.

I have made the new KISS album, SONIC BOOM, the Album Of The Month for October and a review will be coming as soon as the album is released October 6th. I’m also going to see KISS in Boston on October 5th so there is definitely going to be a concert review also. Also, the Anvil documentary, Anvil: The Story Of Anvil, is finally getting a North American release on DVD and Blu-Ray October 6th so I will be grabbing my copy and reviewing it.

Outside of those three specific things, I have nothing else planned. I’ve let the site go down a bit the last couple of months but I’m hoping to revive things and finish the last few months of the year on a high note.

I just wanted to give everyone who has contacted me a heads up with what’s going on at the site and especially what’s up with my August project.

Unfortunately, I injured myself and I have been unable to sit at the computer for the last few weeks. That means the August project of “31 reviews in 31 days” didn’t happen according to plan.

The good news is I am better and I can actually do things again so I have a plan! I am going to move the August project to September and get this thing rolling again.

If you are a band, label or PR firm that sent in an album for review, I will be sending you a new publish date for your records. If you are a loyal reader of HMA that has contacted me saying “where are all the reviews?”…..keep an eye on September 1st.

1,000,000 readers!

Posted: July 21, 2009 in Uncategorized

The counter just hit one million readers and I’m pretty psyched! When I started Heavy Metal Addiction over 3 years ago, I wasn’t sure I’d get anyone to read what I had to say and now a million people have stopped by. There are a lot of Metal websites and blogs out there and it’s pretty cool to know that a million people have read what I’ve written. Thanks to all for stopping by and I hope I can get the 2 million mark in quicker than 3+ years!

State of the Blog update

Posted: July 4, 2009 in Uncategorized

A happy 4th of July to everyone here in the U.S. and hello to everyone else! I just wanted to take up a little time here and tell everyone what is going on here behind the scenes and why there has been very sporadic posts.

I like these little updates from time to time, it gives me a sense of renewal and a fresh start. I’ve been in a funk since September when the kids went back to school and I started a brand new daily schedule. My life is VERY structured and scheduled in order to do all the things my family needs to do, work, and even sleep. The extra time to listen to music started to dwindle as everything got busier…..that made the number of posts go down as well. The new schedule I had to adhere to with the kids’ schools meant less sleep at night after work (4 hours) and small naps during the day…..a contributing factor to the less time spent with the music. I’ve been in this weird funk for 9 months and I’m not really sure where it’s all leading.

The purpose of this blog was to talk about my collection and give my thoughts, I didn’t really think there was anyone out there reading. It’s been 3 1/2 years now and close to 1 million visitors since I started out and this little project has grown. I’ve flirted with the idea that after a million hits I’d call it quits but then I read back over previous posts, and I visit other blogs, and I realize that I still emjoy posting…..I just have no time!

So here’s where it all stands now…..I’m continuing with the site and I’m hoping the scheduling will work itself out but the posts might be a little sporadic again while I try and figure stuff out. I prefer to post daily but I’m not sure that’s in the cards right now. I’ve got piles of albums that I haven’t listened to and I have a ton of reviews that I want to write so I’m going to start and get busy this week because I’m on vacation from work! Hopefully, I’ll get some rest, listen to some new music, and get a renewed passion for writing.

Thanks to everyone out there who has visited…..here’s hoping for the good things to come in the second half of 2009!

– Steve

I’ve taken a couple weeks off from writing here because I had some other projects involving my music collection that I wanted to get started on…..but I have also been a little bored with the whole blogging thing lately. So here’s what I’ve been doing with myself lately…..

iPod & iTunes
When I bought my new iPod 120 gb I was sure I could easily fill it but I didn’t take into account the actual time to take my CDs and burn them in. The first thing I did was figure out how to upload the albums in my Dell DJ 30 back to the computer. When I would load my Dell DJ, I would delete the songs off my hard drive because I knew there was a way to reload it. I reloaded everything and then transferred to iTunes…..the most I had to do was change a few details and update some cover artwork but the process was simple. Good thing too because I had some bands in the DJ with a ton of albums: KISS, Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, UFO, Saxon, MSG, Scorpions, Dio. Once I got everything into iTunes, I started uploading more CDs and I’ve been storing everything on an external hard drive. It’s been a long process because I’ve been stopping and listening to a lot of lost classics. The other iPod project was loading my daughter’s Nano with selected classics from KISS, Saxon, David Lee Roth, Ozzy, and AC/DC and transferring everything she had on the computer’s hard drive to the external.

Collectorz.com – Music Collector
I have had the Music Collector software for four years and I still haven’t catalogued my CD collection. When I bought it a few years ago, I started a list but then we started house hunting, bought a house, moved, etc. My collection lived in various states for the last few years and, now that they are organized, I decided to get a new start cataloging them.

Posters & Pictures
Another Metal hobby of mine is collecting posters and pictures of my favorite bands and albums. I have a ton of old poster and promo flats that I’ve picked up from local record stores and Ebay and I have been able to snag some black & white promo shots of bands on Ebay. After 3 years of being in my house, my wife and I decided we might as well decorate and the upstairs music room is all mine so I’ve been going through things deciding which ones to frame.

So that’s where I’m at now but I should be back blogging soon. My collections have renewed life and that also makes my interest renewed, hopefully I can translate that into some consistent posts…..

I’m on Twitter now! I figured that I would make good use of the Twitter phenomenon and put up the widget so I could real time update what I’m up to without clogging up the scheduled posts. If you want to follow Heavy Metal Addiction on Twitter then go to http://twitter.com/rhodeislandrock

It’s the day before the Superbowl and I am ready for action! Like any self-respecting New England Patriots season ticket holder (17 years and counting!), I cannot justify rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers. So I am throwing all of my rooting interest to the Arizona Cardinals.

Here’s to Arizona being crowned champions of the National Football League!

Final score:
Arizona Cardinals  27
Pittsburgh Steelers 20

Why not start the new year off with a quick look back at 2009? Specifically, some of the albums I missed in 2008. So this week will feature mostly WANTED! posts of 2008 albums that I need to pick up. Maybe I’ll add in an album review or two towards the end of the week when I have more time.

Today marks the third year of Heavy Metal Addiction and it’s been a lot of fun…..and a lot of work. What started out as a small hobby has grown over the last few years to where I’m getting recognized more and more and submitted music is piling up. The cool thing is the friends and contacts I’ve made all over the world, I don’t really have people around me who like Hard Rock and Heavy Metal so this is my main outlet.

So what happened in 2008? Well, readership went through the roof! I may not be racking up the hits that other websites do but I’ve had my fair share of the pie. I ended up with just over 200,000 last year at this time, and now I’m up over 750,000 total (an increase of 540,000 this year). I’m really looking forward to reaching the Million mark sometime in the next few months…..I didn’t think anyone would come to my little site when I first started out.

The most viewed posts for 2008 include the AC/DC – Black Ice release date, anything on Journey with Arnel Pineda, and the album info on Dragonforce’s ULTRA BEATDOWN. The most viewed album reviews for the past year include: Ozzy’s BLACK RAIN (2007), Lita Ford’s OUT FOR BLOOD (1983), Legs Diamond’s TOWN BAD GIRL (1990) and Monowar’s GODS OF WAR (2007). What’s interesting about that is that two of those albums (Manowar & Ozzy) made my The 5 Worst Albums of 2007!

Some what’s on tap for 2008? I have no idea really. Maybe my age is catching up to me but I’m finding it harder to balance my family, work, and 4 hours of sleep a night with my music obsession. My posts (and readers) grew every month of the year and peaked in August, then everything went downhill as my schedule got a little more hectic. What I’m hoping to do is get back into a groove posting once every day. I think I’ve said the same thing every year!

One thing I am going to try and concentrate on is Album Reviews & DVD Reviews. I’m going to try and tighten up the writing and do more reviews, they are the meat & potatoes of the site and the whole reason I started doing this in the first place. A major problem I’ve had is falling behind on the albums people have sent in for review. I’m making a concentrated effort to catch up in January and post as many reviews as I possibly can. I’m also going to do more WANTED! and Ebay Madness columns because they are fun to post, I get a lot of feedback and offers. I think I’m also going to get a little more consistent with the Band Weeks and try to do them at the end of every month. I used to post a lot of news bits but you can get the better coverage at Blabbermouth, Bravewords, and MelodicRock so that’s going to get cut a little except for press releases, new album info and release dates.

So that’s about it for now. I’d like to thank everyone for stopping by and giving the site a look. Hopefully as traffic continues to grow more people will comment on the posts. I’d also like to thank all the bands, labels and PR people that have sent me promos in the last year, it’s been a great year for discovering new music.

Here’s to a great 2009! Cheers!
