Twisted Sister - 11-6-09

Twisted Fucking Sister!!!

Last night I took my daughter to Plymouth, MA to see her favorite band, and one of mine from back in the day…..Twisted Sister. I found out about the concert back in May and bought the tickets immeadiately because Twisted Sister really doesn’t play that many gigs each year. The show was originally scheduled for September 12 but a postponement due to injury brought us to last night at the Plymouth Memorial Hall.

There were three local opening bands before the main event: Chain Drive, Woodland Creatures and View Of A Burning City. I knew nothing about any of the openers but I kind of figured that they would all be Rock bands. Chain Drive was the first band to play and they were pretty good…..melodic Hard Rock played with a lot of energy and obvious talent. I was so impressed by their set that I meant to go to their merch table and pick up a CD if they had them…..unfortunately, I left right after Twisted Sister so I never got a CD. Good solid Hard Rock though, I can’t say enough about them. I noticed a DJ turntable onstage when we made it to our seats initially so I was a little worried that one of the bands was Rap-Rock or Nu-Metal and I was right. Woodland Creatures was like a bad Linkin Park/Papa Roach/Limp Bizkit imitation. I don’t like Rap-Metal so I didn’t care for any of the Rap music these guys pulled off. The shining moment of their set was when my section jointly gave them the finger…..the band was completely out of it’s element. Last band was View Of A Burning City and they were one of those screaming Hardcore/Metal bands that you couldn’t understand at all. They had the craziest bassist, who played in his black socks, that always looked like he was going to fall over! At least they were Metal of some sort and I did pick up their CD & T-shirt combo for $5…..yes, I said $5! Of all the openers the clear winner was Chain Drive.

Twisted Sister setlist:

Stay Hungry
We’re Not Gonna Take It
Burn In Hell
Horror-terria (The Beginning):
a) Captain Howdy
b) Street Justice
I Wanna Rock
The Price
Don’t Let Me Down
The Beast (w/drum solo)
S.M.F.

Encore:
Come Out And Play
30
Under The Blade
You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll

Twisted Sister is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of STAY HUNGRY and they are doing what bands like Judas Priest and Motley Crue are doing by playing their iconic album in it’s entirety. What a show to see! Dee Snider said that, after this show in Plymouth, some of these songs would never be played again so it was a great performance to see. My daughter’s favorite album is STAY HUNGRY, and she knows it word for word, so singing along with Dee and my daughter was pretty cool. I forgot a few of the words but my daughter put on a flawless performance! So did the band! Twisted Sister ripped through all 10 songs off the album as if they were playing them back in 1984. The whole album was a highlight for me but finally hearing ‘Burn In Hell’, ‘The Price’ and ‘Stay Hungry’ live along with the Hard Rock anthems ‘I Wanna Rock’, ‘S.M.F.’ and ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ was mind blowing. Of course the band had the audience in the palm of their hands, there was a ton of energy coming from the audience. There were families, diehard SMFs, Metal fans, Goth rockers, Rappers and people that looked like they were out for dinner and a movie…..all these people were raising their fists and shouting “I wanna rock!” at the tops of their lungs.

The band left the stage after they finished the STAY HUNGRY seet but came back quickly for an awesome encore of three album title tracks and their new song ’30′ (off the new STAY HUNGRY 25th Anniversary reissue), that Dee said had never been played live before. Very cool! My daughter was on edge when she knew Twisted Sister had a new song so she made sure I bought my STAY HUNGRY reissue and burned it into her iPod…..she knew the song better than anyone else besides Dee himself! I knew they would play ‘You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll’ for the final song but it was a treat to get ‘Come Out And Play’ and ‘Under The Blade’. My daughter and I had our hopes up for some other classics like ‘Bad Boys (of Rock ‘n’ Roll)’ and ‘Destroyer’ from UNDER THE BLADE (1982) and ‘Be Chrool To Your Scuel’ from COME OUT AND PLAY (1985) but the band played a short set (14 songs) but a powerful one. I can’t complain about the set at all because it was like travelling back in time for me and it was a dream come true for my daughter. I left the arena last night with a new respect for a things Twisted Sister and became a bigger fan than I already was. If anyone has the chance to catch any of their shows, go for it! It may sound like I’m gushing about the show but it was seriously that great, probably one of the best shows I’ve seen in the last 10 years!

It was a great show, i am a big fan and loved every minute of Twisted Sister was on stage. Not so much of the back-up bands. I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of the show.

    • Head over to Twistedsister.com and check out the Slamboard, there are reviews and pictures there. There’s even a link to a bittorrent of the show. I downloaded it today and it’s dead on.

  2. ChainDrive says:

Hey we just wanted to say thank you for the kind words. Please check us out !!

    • John G says:

Chaindrive you was the best back up band that was here that night. I really liked they way you all presented yourself and the way you treated us the fans while you was on stage.

      Thank You

Don’t know what the reviewer was smoking but chaindrive was a bit off. People in my section were talking about it. I can’t place my finger on it, but tuning instruments and using less cowbell might help. Woodland Creatures was the only opener that was any good, and i hate rap. I was so impressed with their set, i bought 2 of their CDs. Crowd seemed to get into them and were definately loudest for them.

Twisted Sister was amazing. well worth the time, money and sitting thru the opening acts.

    • Sorry, don’t smoke.

Having never seen Chain Drive I thought they were good. Are they the next big Hard Rock band? No…..but they had songs that sounded decent and was more aligned with the type of fan that grew up with Twisted Sister.

Woodland Creatures? I hate Rap too and I couldn’t get into their set at all. It’s Rap! The only thing entertaining about their set was the shorter rapper with the shaved head dancing. I didn’t say their performance was bad, I said I didn’t get into it, many people in my section didn’t get into it, and they seemed out of their normal element. I don’t equate Twisted Sister with Rap music.

      Let me say this…..

I give all the credit in the world to any artist/band that has the talent and guts to get up on stage and play to an audience no matter how big or small. I am not musically inclined like that so I think it’s great that these bands got to open for TS. If someone like yourself got into one of these bands…..great. You liked Woodland Creatures, I likes Chain Drive…..its all a matter of opinion and preference.

  4. DEAF METAL PRODUCTIONS says:

I THINK THAT MOST OF YOU WHO ARE GIVING YOUR OPINIONS ON THE OPENING BANDS ARE DOING IT ON YOUR TASTE NOT BYE THE TALENT OF WHAT THEY WERE PLAYING. IF YOU WANT TO GIVE YOUR OPINION DO IT BYE ACTUALY LISTENING TO THEM PLAY, NOT BYE THE MUSIC (YOU LIKE). I AM NOT A HUGE FAN OF SOME TYPES OF MUSIC THAT WAS PLAYED THAT NIGHT BUT I WILL TELL YOU THAT THEIR WAS ALOT OF TALENT ON THE STAGE IN EVERY BAND. IF YOU CANT SEE THAT , EXCUSE ME HEAR THAT THEN YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMMENT ON THAT. IF YOU DONT THINK I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT THEN YOU DONT KNOW ME OR WHAT IM ABOUT. I WORK IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS AND DO ABOUT 200-250 SHOWS A YEAR FOR QUIT A FEW YEARS NOW. AND HAVE WORKED WITH SOME OF THE MOST TALENTED BANDS IN THE STATE! IF YOU DONT WALK IN THE SHOES DONT COMMENT ON THEM.

    • Isn’t that the whole point of reviewing a CD or a concert: to review it from your point of view? I was at KISS back in October and I read glowing reviews later and ones that said the band sucked…..that doesn’t mean the band didn’t actually give an effort in their performance. Like I said in my comment above, I give all the credit in the world to anyone who has the talent and balls to get up in front of an audience and perform. Obviously they have some sort of talent but it is up to the audience, rather the individual, to decide for themselves if the performance was good and that is based on personal preference. I didn’t dig Woodland Creatures, I hate rap music…..fine. There were obviously people there who did but there were also a lot of people who didn’t. I talked to plenty of people during and after the show and they had similar opinions.

I’m going to assume that you worked this particular show and are not happy that I gave a somewhat negative review of 2 of the opening bands. If you can’t take the criticism from one Metal fan how would it be if you saw more reviews like this? I stand by my review because it is my interpretation of what I saw…..believe me, if Twisted Sister put on a bad show, I would write it.

      • Nora says:

I have to say, coming from that 80′s hair rock craze, though having a much broader spectrum of music that I really love, I was psyched to see Twisted Sister and so extremely disappointed at the far reach of yesteryear performances. It was quite Sad.

The very first band that opened I had never heard before and thought they were very talented and really got into them. I wish they had played more. Woodland Creatures gave a great performance and aren’t really rap. It’s a mixed fusion of hard/classic rock styles, funk and hip hop, with newer grunge rock like LimpBizkit (well new to me, cuz I’m an old bitch). The beat was hot, the performance was great, it’s just hard to make out what they are saying.

I honestly have hardtime listening to metal and heavy crazy rock (that screaming shit) but supported the band nonetheless. I think the mixture of bands or music styles just didn’t really jive together real good. But you really need to LISTEN with an open mind to tone, beat, style, etc.

I hate it when people think a band is great cuz they play the songs that they love to hear even if they are out of key, crazy feedback, no real beat just bullshit karaoke, it’s just ridiculous.

  5. DEAF METAL PRODUCTIONS says:

MY WHOLE POINT OF MY COMMENTS ABOUT (THE COMMENTS MORE THAN THE REVIEW) WAS KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! TO SAY SOMEONE WAS OUT OF TUNE , WHEN I CAN PERSONALY TELL YOU THEY WERE NOT, OR THEY HATE RAP SO IT SUCKS IS WRONG. IF YOU WANT TO HEAR WHAT A BAND LIKE CHAINDRIVE SOUNDS LIKE EVERY NIGHT LAURJOHN2 LET ME KNOW THERE ARE VERYFEW PEOPLE WHO WOULD SAY THEY YOU ARE VERY WRONG ABOUT YOUR COMMENT. ALSO FOR ANYONE WHO KNOWS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY OPENING BANDS NEVER ARE MADE TO SOUND AS GOOD AS THE HEADLINING ACT. EVER PERIOD. THATS THE TRUEST POINT I CAN TELL YOU. AND I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE AN OPINION JUST BE MORE INTELLIGENT ABOUT IT.

  6. DEAF METAL PRODUCTIONS says:

EXCUSE ME I MEANT TO SAY VERYFEW PEOPLE WOULD SAY YOU WERE RIGHT SORRY.

  7. [...] was pumped up because she is now a Rock concert veteran having seen KISS in Boston last October and Twisted Sister last November. My wife hadn’t seen KISS since 2004 when the toured with Poison but the night belonged to my [...]

  8. Nora says:

Check out the drummer in this video from that night. I’m sorry, but these guys were good and aren’t hard core rap but a fusion of hard rock and hip hop
