Press Release: Arnel Pineda is the new Journey singer!

JOURNEY WELCOMES ARNEL PINEDA WITH “OPEN ARMS” TO THEIR FAMILY AS THE BAND’S NEW LEAD SINGER

December 5, 2007

After much speculation, the wait is finally over.

JOURNEY–Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums)–is proud to introduce fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda (“pin-eh-da”). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons.

Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing Journey songs–in addition to original material–with his band, The Zoo, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland. Joining the legendary band is a dream come true for him.

“It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore JOURNEY fans. I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like ‘the voice’ (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world.”

When it was time for JOURNEY to look for a new lead singer, the internet came to their rescue. Guitarist Neal Schon wanted someone new to the music business, so he turned to YouTube. After finding Arnel singing “Faithfully,” he knew he had found the perfect frontman.

“I was frustrated about not having a singer,” explains guitarist Neal Schon, “so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, ‘he can’t be that good.’ But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter.”

Arnel Pineda picks up the story: “My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, ‘what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime?’ So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history.”

“Arnel brings a soulful and passionate voice to JOURNEY,” continues keyboardist Jonathan Cain. “His personality is very well-suited to our music. He’s a sincere, authentic person with a great smile and a big heart. I think fans are really going to love him. With Arnel’s soaring tenor, Journey returns to our heritage sound.”

Schon agrees, “We feel reborn. I think there’s a lot of chemistry between the five of us. At first we were going to go into the studio and just write 4 songs, but now it’s escalated to a lot of great new and diverse material. The stuff sounds tremendous. Everyone’s so stoked about it. We feel very fortunate to have found Arnel.”

JOURNEY is currently working on a new album with legendary producer Kevin Shirley, which they hope to release by spring/summer 2008. Details will be announced early next year.

Now it’s official…..seems Andrew at Melodicrock.com was right again, as usual. If it were up to me, I would have kept Jeff Scott Soto…..only time will tell if this works out with Pineda.

  2. The dude can sing. I wonder when he comes out on stage, if he’s going to have one those lines from the movie, Rockstar.

“You know, I’m just a regular guy who grew up with the posters of these guys on my wall… and now I’m one of them! That’s right, I’m standing here, living proof that if you work hard enough, and you want it bad enough… dreams do come true. So follow your dreams… “

  3. I love Journey!!

It ain’t about the singer, it’s the lyrics of the songs that matter. I wouldn’t care if Celine Dion was the chosen lead for the band. I would still eatch the concert just for the songs!

  4. He’s really something the best since steve perry and yet different.
He’s the only replacement that could fill the bill, and yes the others did a very good job too….but this guy …he’s got the guts and the power. Like Steve.
I am really looking forward to see the band in February when they come to Chile.

  5. This guy’s going to blow the house down. He’s going to have to if he’s going to win over the ficticious “south detroit” boys and girls in good ‘ol U-S-of A!!!

Even if Neal S. & Jonathan C. has this guys back, it’s still going to be an uphill battle to win over a hostile arena crowd. Even though Steve Perry’s the man. I’ll pull for this guy Arnel to front Journey. I wish him luck (not w/ Journey-because they obviously like him) w/ the fans.

  6. the voice makes ARNEL PINEDA a JOURNEY. I can’t wait to get their first record and be on their concert in 2008. The best of the JOURNEY is yet to come.

  7. Arnel sounds well.. almost like Steve Perry. I am just curious how will he fare to the American audience. Well good luck. – From Tripoli, Libya (Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya

  8. Another Filipino that puts the Philippines in the map.
It only proves that Filipinos also got what it takes to be
    known worldwide.
    Good luck Arnel!
    Mabuhay ka!

  9. I just heard about this news last night and was hooked with Arnel’s video in youtube til the next day. Damn, gives me chills everytime i hear new cover songs by him.

  10. For all those of you too lazy to search Youtube, here’s a collection of Arnel Pineda’s covers. It’s not complete by any measure but it has some of his best covers IMO. Enjoy. :P

  11. Arnel Pineda is really fantastic its a 5 days straight now that im totally hooked up in all his videos…goodluck to JOURNEY 2008!

  12. birdienamnams, thanks for the link but I have to disagree with you. It’s just the quality of the audio that makes it better. but the voice of the lead singer, not at all! As Jonathan Cain said above, “Arnel brings a SOULFUL and PASSIONATE voice to JOURNEY,” “His personality is very well-suited to our music.” He knows what he’s talking about. Not to mention, Arnel’s voice gives chill to everyone who listens to him while the other guy nada. He is okay, though!

  13. birdiemann. he is pretty decent. But only one journey track cant cut it. Arnel does everything and very versatile. Neil knows that…Neil can use arnel on the concert tours, obviously sounds like perry. And creating new tracks and new albums… Arnel is just perfect either way journey is banking with him..

  14. Man, this dude rocks. Who knew and of all places, he comes from the Philipines discovered in YouTube! I love Journey!!! and I’ll be the first one in line when they have a concert here in Los Angeles!

  15. music lovers cant wait to see JOURNEY’s concert here in california especialy with their new lead singer AP, Mr Schon and the management of Journey please priority California for your upcoming concert tour this year. more power and GOD BLESS you all.

Hope i could be in one of your concerts….. More power Journey!

  17. Arnel is really amazing. No wonder why the Journey guys love him and really excited about him. I can’t wait to have their first album. The future is really bright for Arnel because he’s got the pipe, can sing not only Journey songs but lots from different bands. Arnel keep working..

  18. I saw each and every videos Blindswordman post it. that’s profoundly amazing! this guy can sing…with all hearts out. I can’t wait to see the group once again. hoping they’re coming her in Europe, especially here in France. definitely will buy your new CD. Thanks again for posting.

  20. I just learned of Arnel Pineda becoming part of Journey in the news on t.v. then i serached for his videos on toutube and simce then i got hooked again to jouneys songs, this time via arnel’s powerful voice, with kjournys’ resouces, they can improve hjim more and make his voice even more powerful…amazingly soulful voice…evrytime i would listen , its like i can’t stop listening to it over and over again, and each time is bliss…

  21. Well, finally this guy Arnel P.!!! Would you believe I”ve been watching this guy since his early band days at Shakey’s New Frontier in Cubao. He used to cover Freddie M’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Journey’s songs, etc. Very talended
indeed. Amo band, Boss, Zoo, they all got the their heart and soul form AP. Go and Rock the Worl, man.

  22. hey is there any chance journey will dig over here in los angeles?Journey got a big fn base right here.I know they would not dissapoint them
if they come over here. Please give us updates on their tours.by the way arnel is no steve perry but the guy is just amazing and excellent voice.Hes a real deal for them,no doubt.Steve perry had his time and we cant take that away from him.Hes a legend on his own way.Peace to you brothers

  23. Yup this guy is pretty amazing, I’m in a band myself and just surfing to you tube of different bands and found the ZOO. I got hooked up with his talent and even told my wife at the time I will not be surprise if he will become a Journey front man. I have already a ticket of their concert at Panet Hollywood. I love Journey then, I love them now. God speed Arnel

  24. Guys….I`m from Chile in South America and yesterday Feb 21, 2008, I saw Arnel’s debut with Journey in Festival de Viña del Mar……what can I say?? This guy is amazing!!!! he really brings S. Perry to my mind when I hear him, his tone is similar, he can go on high chords like that!!!!!, probably, you can check it out on A&E channel, they ussualy replay the Festival.
But for Journey fans, Arnel is incredible, he is not only a great singer, but also, very nice personality….I think Arnel will do very good in the band and it looks like the band fitts him as well.
    Take care guys.
    Porthos

  25. My wife and I watched ya’ll video on you tube,Arnel you are truly a God
given talent extra ordinary voice,Hey what I can say “” Action speak much
louder than words,Journey is back on the top of the world,Arnel you
made our loving country great,I’m a big fan of Journey since 80′s and
it will remain the same,Just the thanks the lord for all the blessings.Let
us know when you all coming to Houston Texas.Mabuhay!!!

  26. Just watch the Chile concert videos and listen to the man. It doesn’t matter what his race is, Arnel P. delivered much more than what we expected. He brought chills as he rendered the old Journey songs. I am back…hooked again to Journey old songs!!!

  27. The new Journey singing is good and so was the others however, no one will ever take the place of Steve Perry. He was Journey and in my eyes, he will always be!!

  28. i was in tears when i heard arnel pineda singing i was shock it cant be real that this guy can sing his just an ordinary little guy but a big and amazing voice i go to you tube every morning i got hooked up with you tube i just cant belive that journey is going to have a very long journey with this guy arnel pineda from the philippines. GOD BLESS THE JOURNEY AND MUCH MUCH MORE CONCERT TO COME ! i cant wait for them to come in california

  29. I’m proud of your ARNEL.
This guy is perfect! I cant wait to see him.
MABUHAY! Dont forget to look back where you belong before.
    GOD BLESS.

  30. Man, I had my doubts when I first heard the news. I watched his ZOO youtube vids and though I was impressed, I doubted he would be able to fill the bill with Journey. Then I watched every single one of the Chile videos.DAYMN!!! Arnel is the real deal!! Neil made the right choice. Arnel is the man! He fits the band more so than any other replacements they’ve had. I can’t wait to see these guys here in the US. This is the true Rock Star story!!

Go get ‘em Arnel!! The JOURNEY continues!

  31. Watched the vids from Chile – Wow!! I saw him in HK a few years back and he’s amazing!! It’s unbelievable how he keeps up with their repertoire – one ordinary singer will just wilt after just belting out one strong Journey song!! This guy just keeps going and going – even jumping around the staged! I like Steve Augeri but never liked Sotto . . . Arnel will kick ass and can’t wait to see him and the rest of Journey this weekend in Planet Hollywood. Got my tickets and can’t wait . . . Of course, Steve Perry will always be the “Voice” and the man but like the rest of the band members have said – they felt like they’re reborn with Arnel . . . Go go Journey. Go Arnel.

  32. BTW – if anyone misses the great Steve Perry – you can catch him on David Pack’s CD – The Secret of Moving On . . . Great CD – check it out . .

  33. hi arnel,

my long lost friend… AMO band days…Dada, Kamlon, Ana, Ulysis. Hope you still remember me.

please reply. SO PROUD OF YOU. REGARDS TO TATAY, ERIC AND OTHER 2 BROTHERS

  34. Saw them in Planet Holly in Vegas . . . Great concert – although I noticed that he needs to conserve his voice from their grueling repertoire . . . he was not going for the high notes in the last few songs they sang . . . he also went off key in one of the last songs – I think that’s why they had to re-do a couple of songs in the end after the show – they had to call the people to come back in as they were recording this for DVD release . . . but overall it was a blast!! The new songs were not so popular yet for many of the audience as they try to absorb it for the first time but the song “Wildest Dreams” should be a kick ass hit!! Can’t wait for the disks to come out in a few months . . .

  35. Just a small note to our ‘kababayans’ around the world. As a Filipino, let us also show our respect and admiration to other members of Journey – new and old members, specifically Mr. Steve Perry, the original lead vocalist whom I admired most and was loved by millions of people around the world because of their hit songs Open Arms, Faithfully, etc. Least to say, Journey is already a legend. We should not only be proud of Arnel but be thankful for Journey’s discovery of Arnel. In one of Arnel’s interviews, he said, “I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like the voice of Steve Perry, but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world”. I can feel that Arnel has a good heart and very humble man so as a Filipino, we should protect his dignity and credibility. To you Arnel, stay from where you are and always keep a low profile. We should also express our gratitude to Mr. Neil Schon and the rest of Journey band, who has made Arnel’s dream come true. Mabuhay ka Arnel!!!… Cheers to JOURNEY!!!

  36. very well said johnmar, but i think most of us are just so excited that sometimes we forgot to include the group.

GO JOURNEY !!! we are all waiting for your CD OR DVD, Good luck Arnel and stay humble. We all love you !!!

  37. just found this site and read all the comments and there’s only one universal message – Journey IS ALIVE! It’s aliveeee! And their frontman monster is here to stay —- so let’s just enjoy the music folks!

love you all especially the new addition to the band, AP….
I enjoyed your concert at the PH,LV and will follow you around. Stay well!!!

  39. i want to ask if the AMO band was the one managed in the 80s by AUDIO CAPTAIN in makati, philippines. iff it was i was one of the co-mangers. i do remember the fABULOUS voice of the lead singer. wwas thAt arnel? rock on!

  40. “Thanks” to Neil Schon for all his effort and time for looking patiently and warm welcome as one their group in “JOURNEY”.

  42. galing ng idol ko!!!
    i’m glad you’re on top!!
you deserve it!! whatta God’s graced voice ya hav!!!
(let the other guys see your background first before they insult your personality!huh)
God bless the journey & Arnel

  43. My husband & I watched the Concert in Vegas and brings memories of HS & college days. It was amazing! Journey is good from the beginning and coming from the SJ valley where Steve Perry came from we are lucky to have watched the concert even if it was almost 5 hours drive but it’s worth every second . like Neal Schon said they’re reborn and thanks to a kababayan Arnel Pineda, he brought good old days back! Thanks to Journey for coming back for bringing back the band again!

  44. Neal Schon is a virtuoso on his own, Jonathan Cain is multitalented, Deen Castronovo can also sing and the greatest drummer and Ross Valory is great also. The band members are the best in my opinion. Journey added Arnel Pineda in their lineup. Conclusion!!!! Journey will be the best band around. Waiting for their concert in Concord, California and also waiting for the CD coming out June 3,2008.

  45. The Revelation should be called The Resurrection. The new Journey
is a miracle. . . and the Miracle is Arnel Pineda.

  46. Just purchaed Revelation. Awesome! Thanks for the memories and for new memories to come. God Bless – Arnel and Journey!

  47. i have great time last night watch the concert of journey here in irvine verizon amphitheater……so much fun,,,Arnel you really did a great job…more power

  48. God Bless You Arnel!

Neil Schon and the rest of the guys have every right to be PROUD of you! You are INCREDIBLE! Your voice and stage presence is SECOND-TO NONE! JOURNEY is back BETTER THAN EVER in my opinion. So ROCK ON my Dear Arnel, ROCK ON!!

  49. my wife and i are great fans of journey, in fact we are listening to their music and watching their video concert almost everyday, the music of journey are amazing, and now, arnel is with the band? we admire not only the music of journey but the band itself, hope that the band will compose more songs, we love you guys, more power to you arnel, neil, jonathan, dean and ross.

  50. I had reservation about this guy but seeing him performed was like a revelation. The dude although shorter than the rest of them has some voice, not like Perry (although he can easily sounds like him) but a really powerful pipe full of emotions. He may not be white but he’s the perfect one for Journey to carry on their tradition.
