New bassist in Van Halen: Wolfgang Van Halen

From Andrew at

A lot of speculation and a lot of new updates are now appearing in relation to the Van Halen alive again in 2007 news started here a couple of weeks back. Late last week celeb gossip site posted news of the band and who would play bass. Today G4TV ran a quote from band publicist Janie Liszewski confirming that news. I called Liszewski for a confirmation of these comments. She happily obliged, stating that yes, Wolfgang Van Halen was the band’s new bassist, suggesting that this wasn’t news, as it was stated as such on Howard Stern by Eddie Van Halen in September. She also confirmed that the Van Halen trio – Eddie, Alex and Wolfgang were ‘busy in the studio, rehearsing and writing’. The rehearsing of course is for the aforementioned 2007 tour that the band’s management are currently shopping to prospective promoters. No confirmation as yet of the vocalist for next year’s Van Halen tour – but as stated in my original report, David Lee Roth is the singer that is being included in the package offered to concert promoters. I’m told Roth has not yet visited the Van Halen’s in the studio.

— Interesting news but the writing was on the wall. It’s not a Van Halen reunion without Michael Anthony, in my opinion. I’m sure Wolfgang Van Halen is talented but I’m not paying the money to see 3/4 of Van Halen, even with Diamond Dave. This move probably also seals the fate of the Hagar-era in Van Halen. I doubt Sammy would work in Van Halen again without Mike.

  1. I agree that Sammy wouldn’t work with VH without Mike again. My problem with this is that with three Van Halen family members in VH, how long do you really think DLR will last?

  2. Man I have waited for this since I was 12! Second coming of CHrist damn near! And now to have Eddies ego push his kid on the world to replace not only the bassist, but the true voice and tone of Van Halen is a real insult! I could never admire a man more for the love he has for his kid, but is he doing anyone but his ego a favor? 16 and on the road with the biggest party band of all time!? Is there a law against this? LOL SO I guess 11 and 12th grades can wait. Well So can I! Not wasting my money on this one! Long live the memories!

PS – I am sure Wolfie rocks. Live the dream baby!

  3. Making your kid the bass player of your rock band is like a coach making his son the quarterback of the team. What has he done to earn this? Nothing! I am going to pay $250.00 for a VH concert ticket to watch in awe as some overweight 16-year old kid plays bass, I don’t think so. Let Wolfie start his own band from scratch and slug it out in clubs like everyone else. Instant rock star: Just add water.

  4. I am a retired bass player who played in bar bands for years. My son, a much better guitar player than I am, would jam with the band on occasion back in his teen years. There’s nothing like the thrill of playing with your own kid. I know where Eddie’s coming from…and it’s no one’s business bu his! Sit back and enjoy! Stop complaining.

  5. As a very long time fan of Van Halen I’m curious as to why the choice was made to oust Michael to make room for Wolfgang rather than simply include him in the line up .. Yes , Van Halen has always been a 4some but the gross lack of loyalty demonstrated in the action saddens me .. I’ll safely assume it was the choice of Eddie , my reaction , WOW , STUNNED …
