I picked up Hydrogyn’s debut, Best Served With Volume, last year after I read a positive review online. I listened to the album many times because I really wanted to like this band. A good debut: Julie Westlake (lead singer) provided great vocals and the rest of the band brought the musicianship (the band becoming very tight due to numerous live gigs). There was something missing. Turned out that I didn’t like the production, it sounded muddy, the vocals drowned by the band.

Well that has all changed on Hydrogyn’s sophomore release, Bombshell, after enlisting famed producer Michael Wagener (produced Accept, Skid Row, Metallica, Motley Crue and more). Wagener has taken the best from the band and helped bring that out in the recording. No more muddy mix, nor more drowned out vocals….Westlake is now front and center showing off her talent. I also think the guitars sound crisper on Bombshell, especially come solo time. Too bad Wagener didn’t produce the debut!

I’ve been at this one all day. Favorite tracks here: ALL! I am really digging this album! I could have done without the cover of AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’…..it just seems out of place in the middle of the album. It’s done well, just out of place.

The pre-order was $10 at the Hydrogyn website and it arrived in 3 days with a band window decal and a B&W 8X10 pic of the album cover signed by Julie Westlake. Now that’s a band giving their fans some value! Hopefully the band will tour in the Northeast (RI/MA area) so I can check their live show.

  1. I reviewed this one a couple of months ago too. I really liked the rocking tracks a lot, but there were a couple of country sounding tracks on there, that I just couldn’t get into.

Julie Westlake isn’t hard on the eyes either. ;)
